I was encouraged last year by the Thousand Oaks City Council’s adoption of accessory dwelling unit aka “granny flat” criteria, enabling homeowners to add affordable living space for lowincome residents and our aging parents. California Senate Bill 1069 was signed into law in September 2016 with the intent of removing barriers to building ADUs and to create much-needed affordable housing. Thousand Oaks has not permitted ADUs in the past, and SB 1069 has now forced the city to allow them.
